Businesses are thriving in the River City thanks to the solid number of employees! In fact, the Decatur metro area has one of the country’s lowest unemployment rates, along with the nearby Huntsville metro area.

In a recent report, Governor Kay Ivey shared the news that the Decatur metro area has one of the country’s lowest unemployment rates in the nation. More specifically, according to data gathered by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Decatur and Huntsville metro areas both have a 1.6 percent unemployment rate.
The report goes on to state that the information is based on figures from March 2023. What’s more, the North Alabama metro areas tied with Rapid City, South Dakota, for the lowest unemployment rates in the country.
The Decatur metro area has one of the country’s lowest unemployment rates, which includes Morgan and Lawrence counties. The Huntsville metro area includes Madison and Limestone counties.
Nationwide, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the unemployment rate for April 2023 was 3.4 percent.
Additional Alabama unemployment rates
In addition to Decatur and Huntsville’s low rates, the Birmingham-Hoover metro area also has a lower unemployment rate at 1.8 percent. Since they cover a larger area, their ranking was grouped with metro areas with a population of one million or more.
Similarly, the governor recently announced overall, Alabama’s unemployment rate in March 2023 set a new record low at 2.3 percent. That statewide figure is still lower than the most recent national average!
