Coming Up: Alabama Jubilee 2023

Alabama Jubilee 2023

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s a hot air balloon! At least, that’s what visitors to Decatur will be saying during Alabama Jubilee 2023, the crowd-pleasing annual hot air balloon classic coming up Memorial Day weekend!

About Alabama Jubilee 2023

Colorful hot air balloons will take to the skies throughout the weekend festivities during the Alabama Jubilee 2023 on May 27th-28th. Typically, the best time to see the balloons is either early in the morning or early in the evening.

More specifically, arrive at the field before 6 a.m. if you are an early bird. If you are more of a night owl, aim for a 5 p.m. viewing and visit.

Did you know the Alabama Jubilee is one of the few balloon events that actually invites the public to walk on the field where the balloons are? It’s one of the many things that make this event special!

Plus, it gives festival attendees the chance to speak directly to the pilots. You don’t want to miss your chance to ask about the ups and downs of hot air balloon flying. What’s more, you won’t want to miss your chance to ask for a free tethered ride!

But, remember, tethered rides are offered at the discretion of the pilots as part of the scheduled evening events.

In the morning, visitors are treated to competition flights, including the Saturday morning “Morgan County Commission Hare & Hound,” for instance. To clarify, one balloon is chosen as the “hare.” It takes off first while the others try to follow it.

Then the first balloon will land and roll out a large fabric with an “X” in the middle. The “hound,” which are the other balloons, try to drop a bean-bag marker on the X. Whoever gets closest to the center wins.

More about the festival

Along with balloon flights, races, tethered rides and a balloon glow, there will be car shows, motorcycle shows, tractor shows, live entertainment, activities, fireworks and more! The best way to make your weekend plans is to check out the schedule of events.

Admission and parking are free all weekend long during the Alabama Jubilee 2023. Connect with the Alabama Jubilee on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the latest announcements.
