There’s a new place to buy fresh vegetables and fruits in southwest Decatur. But there’s more to it than that. When you come to Ravens Nest Produce, you get to pick your own selection of fruits and veggies right from the plant!
What to Know
Ravens Nest Produce is an organic, hydroponic farm. Asking yourself what that means? In a nutshell, it refers to the cultivation of plants without soil. Instead, flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs are grown in various containers.
They are supplied with a nutrient solution, oxygen, water, and of course, sunlight!
The end result? Fresh, healthy produce on the vine grown 30 to 50 percent faster than in the soil. There are about 15,000 plants growing on the farm.
For example, shoppers will find green beans, collards, greens, strawberries, sweet potatoes, carrots and so much more.
Produce on a Mission
Ravens Nest Produce is an extension of the Apostolic Church of God. Several years ago, the church created a food bank to provide meals to those in need. They named it Ravens Nest in honor of the following Bible verse:
“And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.” I Kings 17:4
In the spirit of the Lord providing, Ravens Nest offers food for both the body and soul. To further enhance their mission, the church created the hydroponic farm. Proceeds from the produce fund both local mission efforts as well as mission projects in Ghana.
