Flint Creek Canoe Trail

This summer, you’ve probably worked through all possible entertainment options. Watching movies, going for walks, and even learning a new hobby—you’ve found ways to fill the time. Still, if boredom is knocking on the door, shoo it away—there’s more fun to be had. This past June marked the opening of the Flint Creek Canoe Trail. If you love time out on the water, consider stopping by!

What is the Flint Creek Canoe Trail?

The Alabama Scenic River Trail is a statewide non-profit organization designed to improve recreation and community access of our waterways. Their organization also keeps our waterways clean, healthy, and beautiful. They have also helped make the Flint Creek Canoe Trail ready for visitors!

Their project took almost two years to complete, giving us a wonderful new look at a state treasure. Now, you can kayak, canoe, and take in the local wildlife on this 20-mile-long trail. You can also camp at a corresponding campsite as well!

Where is the Flint Creek Canoe Trail?

The Flint Creek Canoe Trail spans 20 miles, threading through spots like the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, Hartselle, Alabama, and of course, close to us in Decatur, AL.

Visiting and Safety Details

Ready for a visit to Flint Creek Canoe Trail? The closest spot to us is at 3121 Visitor Center Road, where the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is located. The Canoe Trail doesn’t charge an entrance fee. You can visit from sunrise to sunset.

Please, remember to follow the rules of water safety and standard canoeing practices. You should bring—and wear—a life jacket at all times. Additionally, please follow the rules of social distancing and mask ordinances.

There will be posted signage, including maps, so make sure to follow all rules and regulations, as well as keep an eye out for your travel pattern. Finally, you will need to bring a canoe of your own or rent one from a nearby outfitter, since onsite rentals aren’t currently available.

Summary

If this season merits an exciting—and safe—outing, we know just where to go: the Flint Creek Canoe Trail. Whether you like to kayak or canoe, some time on the water can offer you an opportunity to renew. Have a fun time out there!
